Let's Talk Cubans...

Well... This BLOG has been out there for about 1 week so let's see if anyone is visiting. We all know that Cuban Cigars are still a "no-no" for U.S. citizens. However, every cigar smoker I know has smoked a Cuban or two and may have a humidor full at home. (Did you ever notice that when magazines like Cigar Aficionado interview celebs; they always mention their favorite Cuban Cigars like the embargo doesn't apply to them.)
The floor is open. I love a good Habano but they are not ALWAYS good but are ALWAYS expensive! Any input from the readers? CUBAN CIGARS: Too expensive; Favorites; The current ban; Will Castro's death change the U.S. laws and / or impact the prices of cigars in general?... etc... Any comments on Cuban Cigars??? Would love to hear from you...

Cuba will be inundated when Castro dies. I'm sure there are land speculators, casino operators, manufacturers and anything else that would benefit from a small but beautiful island country 100 miles off our shore. Cigar growers and traders will be near the top of the heap.

Personally, I think the Cuban cigar hype is just that, hype. There might be a handful of people alive who could tell the difference between a quality stick that came from Cuba vs Dominica vs Nicaragua, etc. The rest are the same type of people who think that they can tell the difference between Avian bottled water vs city municipal from a tap. They're full of shit. ;)

Thanks for writing in Tom. I was beginning to think no one would ever comment. I agree with you in principal. Maybe a few decades ago; the Cuban Cigar was superior but now... Cigar manufacturers from all over the globe have had plenty of time to perfect their product. Don't get me wrong; I have smoked some outstanding Cubans but if anyone has had an A. Fuente Don Carlos #3; An H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon or a Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 (to name but a few)they must agree that these are superior smokes and give any Habano a run for the money.

I smoked a couple of cubans with my grandfather, when we were in Costa Rica a few years back. My grand father has been a Cigar smoker since his 20's and was smoking cubans well before the embargo. We both agree that the premium sticks available from Nicaragua, DR, and Honduras are equal or better than the "new" Cubans available from your local Shady Cigar shop or over seas. The couple I have left in my Humi are there for conversation or if the boss invites me to a party or something. My grandfather does say that the Cuban sticks he smoked in the 50's were unreal, compared to anything else offered at that time.

I have read that when Castro came in and nationalized the cigar industry that much of the cigar talent left cuba for greener pastures. Thus diminishing the quality of the Cuban cigar. So even if the embargo is lifted, it may take some time before the cuban cigar rises to the expectations and status we all wish it still had.

hey guys, I'm Nick from California... I think the concept of the decreased quality of the Cuban Cigars goes hand by hand with the fact that 95% of "Cubans" are fake... I don't think much more people will read this so I'll share a secret with you guys:
Call Mr. Carlos at (786) 356 1070
He is my cigar guy. Tell him I gave you his phone... Ask him any question you might think of about cigars...
And if you want to get some real ones, just let him know.
Enjoy.

Having spend significan time abroad I have had the opportunity to try, at least one cigar, from about half of the Cuban brands currently in production. Personally, I think there are just as many good cigars coming from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.

I agree! I have smoked many Cubans on my travels and find them to be over-hyped and over-priced. I'll take a Romeo y Julieta Vintage #3 from the DR over any Cuban I have ever smoked (with very few possible exceptions).

PS - I have had a few brands of the real deal and they are awesome. There are some brands that are just as good from other countries but the flavor of a Cuban is unique.

I have never personally smoked a cuban cigar, but I will be on Friday.

The best cuban I ever had was a cohiba cuban you can see so at my site http://womensmokingcigars.wordpress.com/2009/08/19/cohiba-cigars/ but of course I touched me a arturo fuente cigar and I dunno, they kinda duke it out evenly, I don't know who's winning, they both smoke pretty nicely. Whatever, visit http://womensmokingcigar.wordpress.com for reviews of alot of cigars, and I"m kinda a history buff so I give the history on em. Remember, cohiba cubans are made in factories full of naked virgins who rub the cigar against their thighs hahahaha

US has imposed restrictions on Cuba because it is a communist country. but i have a question why US is so eager to change minds of Cuban's.. i dont think this is a problem for US. it should allow to trade with Cuba so that most of the citizen can smoke cuban cigars which they have heard so many times.

Cuban cigar especially HDM Churchill are my favourite. Cuban cigars provide such fantastic taste and perfect burn from start to finish. The flavors are simply intense, with earth, spice and licorice building into a dense thick smoke. They have so much character that it is really easy for anyone to illustrate difference between a Cuban and non Cuban cigar.
